FINAL year engineering students from around Australia can now apply for scholarships to join a robot war games team to be led by Flinders University.
Eight students will be granted scholarships to help create intelligent robots that work together to complete tasks for the MAGIC 2010 challenge.

The robots have to complete defence-oriented tasks such as reconnaissance and "neutralising" targets, and the international competition – sponsored by the US and Australian defence departments – will be held somewhere in South Australia during October next year.

The Flinders-led team, MAGICian – or Multiple Autonomous Ground-vehicle International Challenge by Intelligent Autonomous Navigators – is one of 10 shortlisted internationally to compete.

The university will offer eight $3000 scholarships for final-year engineering students to undertake project work over the summer.

Honours students on the MAGICian team presented their work at the Projects Expo last week alongside other inventions such as medical diagnostic tools, autonomous underwater vehicles and computer software.

Students interested in being part of the project can apply for a summer scholarship by emailing MAGICian team leader David Powers at david.powers@flinders.edu.au.
