Picture this…. The typical excel spreadsheet calculations are completed, you launch into design and maybe even complete a study of robot cycle times using a proprietary robot simulation package. You build the system and begin initial testing. Everything is going great, everyone is happy as you quickly achieve 70% of the required rates.

As you approach your target it takes more and more effort to gain a few seconds here or there. You spend another week tweaking to get a bit more capacity, but you are only at 90% and it becomes obvious that rework will be required to get the additional capacity required.
